Student Internship Program

The Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School is seeking student interns for the fall 2014 semester.   Availability to start by August 4, 2014 is preferred, but later start dates will be considered on an individual basis; please indicate your availability in your application materials. We may consider extension through Spring 2015 if there is mutual interest.

Who is eligible?

Harvard undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in the Center’s work are eligible to apply. More information about the Center is available at our website. The internship is open to students in all disciplines, but we particularly welcome applications from students studying health policy, philosophy, bioethics, law, medicine, business economics, and the sciences.  We are also interested in receiving applications from students interested in technology and communications.

What will the internship entail?

The Petrie-Flom Center is a busy research center that hosts a variety of events and supports the research work of several senior associates, academic fellows, and visiting scholars. Occasionally, work will need to be assigned and completed on a short turn-around time. Interns need to be able to work to deadline with minimal supervision in a fast-paced office environment.

PFC Student Interns will support the Center primarily through communications and office work. Under the supervision of the Executive Director and Administrative Director, interns will assist with various projects, including:

  • Blog maintenance at Bill of Health, and possibly weekly news round-ups or substantive posts;
  • Management of social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter;
  • Drafting of bi-weekly email newsletter using Constant Contact;
  • Website maintenance and content development, including identification of key topical resources for those interested in the field, career-related resources, and relevant programs, centers, courses, etc. around Harvard and beyond;
  • Tracking news related to the Center and its areas of interest;
  • Assistance with event coordination, advertising, and preparation.

Interns are encouraged but not required to attend Center events, which are generally held weekly throughout the semester. Unless agreed upon in advance as a work assignment, students will not be paid for hours spent at Center events.

Interns will be paid commensurate with their experience and assigned duties.  Please note: Preference will be given to students who qualify for work-study.

Hours may vary week to week depending on the Center’s needs, but due to an employee on leave in the fall interns should expect to work 10 hours per week.

Please note that the student internship is distinct from the Petrie-Flom Center Student Fellowship Program, which entails participation in Center events and the completion of a piece of independent scholarship.  The Student Fellowship, in contrast to the internship, is open only to Harvard graduate students.  More information on the fellowship program is available here: https://www.law.harvard.edu/programs/petrie-flom/fellowship/student_apply.html.

To apply to the Petrie-Flom Center Student Internship Program, please submit the following materials:

  2. Academic transcript (unofficial is fine);
  3. Statement of interest and relevant background (two or three paragraphs; please indicate if you have particular expertise or experience related to the tasks described above, as well as if you are available for the full year or only one semester);
