This week we interviewed Kirk J. Nahra, Partner at Wiley Rein. As his firm website notes, he “was named as the Co-Chair of the Confidentiality, Privacy, and Security Workgroup, a panel of government and private sector privacy and security experts advising the American Health Information Community (AHIC) on privacy and security issues arising from health information technology,” and has also “been named an expert practitioner by the Guide to the Leading US Healthcare Lawyers, a leading health care lawyer by The Best Lawyers in America directory and one of the leading privacy “hired guns” by Computerworld.” We discussed HITECH, HIPAA, health data outside the HIPAA zone, and the future of health privacy. We also briefly mentioned emerging threats to the US/EU Safe Harbor framework.

Professional football has come under significant scrutiny in recent years, particularly because of concerns over player health and safety.  While concussions are most often discussed, players also face a variety of other health risks, from joint and muscle problems to cardiac malfunction to issues with chronic pain. But health risks are just one part of story. So, too, are the potential short and long-term benefits these exceptional athletes may reap from the game.

Come learn more about the debate, and about The Football Players Health Study at Harvard University, which seeks to understand and improve the health and wellbeing of former NFL players. This study looks at the risks and benefits of playing football at the professional level over the life of the player, supports novel discoveries and new therapies, and seeks to improve the systems and organizational structures that may affect player health.

Student Fellow Alumna Heidi Williams wins MacArthur “Genius Grant”

A big congratulations to Heidi Williams, who was a Student Fellow at the Petrie-Flom Center in 2008-2009!

From the MIT News article

MIT economist Heidi Williams, whose scholarly work looks at the effects of patent policies and technology on medical research and health care, has been granted a 2015 MacArthur Fellowship.

The high-profile annual fellowships, unofficially known as “genius grants,” include an award of $625,000 that is paid over five years and is unrestricted, meaning recipients are allowed to use it as they see fit. There are usually fewer than 25 MacArthur Fellowships awarded each year.

Williams says she is “very humbled and extremely grateful” to be a recipient of the fellowship. Upon being informed of the award by an official with the MacArthur Foundation, she adds, “I was completely speechless.” […]
