Introducing Dan Carpenter

We’re excited to introduce and welcome Dan Carpenter to our blogging community as an occasional contributor.

Dan is the Allie S. Freed Professor of Government and Director of the Center for American Political Studies (CAPS) at Harvard University.  He conducts research in political economy, regulation, the history and political economy of pharmaceuticals, and more generally American politics and political development.  He often blends historical, mathematical and statistical methods in his research, trying to harness the contributions of different tools and perspectives.

Dan is author of Reputation and Power: Organizational Image and Pharmaceutical Regulation at the FDA (Princeton University Press, 2010), which received the Allan Sharlin Memorial Award from the Social Science History Association and a four-star rating from British Medical Journal. His research and writing have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Nature, Archives of Internal Medicine, Bulletin of the History of Medicine, Health Affairs, the Journal of Law, Economics and Organization, Studies in American Political Development, the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, and the Journal of Politics, among other professional venues.  He currently serves on the U.S. Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Counterfeit, Falsified and Substandard Drug Products and also served on the IOM’s Committee on Scientific Standards for Modified Risk Tobacco Products.

Dan has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford and at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and he has held grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Alfred Sloan Foundation and the Safra Center for Ethics.  He currently serves as co-editor of the journal Studies in American Political Development.
