The Department of Health Sciences offers a Master of Public Health in Urban Health, a Master of Science in Exercise Science, and a Bachelor degree in Health Sciences. We currently offer a PhD program in Personal Health Informatics in conjunction with the College of Computer and Information Science and a new PhD in Population Health is being implemented.

Qualifications include: (1) earned doctoral degree in public health, a related health profession, or medical, biological, or social sciences, (2) excellent record of university teaching, (3) excellent record of scholarly publications and external research funding, (4) demonstrated leadership in administering an academic/research department, (5) strong commitment to interdisciplinary education, and (6) demonstrated background and commitment to supporting a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.

Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center invites applications from experienced health law teachers and scholars for the Kermit Gitenstein Distinguished Visiting Chair in Health Law and Policy. Touro is seeking a nationally-known professor in the field of health law and policy to fill the chair for the spring semester in 2014. The Gitenstein visiting professor will teach at least one course at the law school, deliver public lectures, and participate fully in faculty and student life. Touro Law Center is part of Touro College, which includes New York Medical College—one of the largest private health sciences universities in the nation. Job Opening — Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine Seeking Bioethicist

HJF is seeking a Bioethicist to provide support under an NIH-funded contract to the Division of AIDS (DAIDS) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a component of NIH, located on Rockledge Drive in Bethesda, Maryland.  Under the NIH Contract, HJF’s separate operating division, HJF-DAIDS, provides scientific and operations support to DAIDS including the Basic Sciences Program (BSP). Responsibilities include researching and preparing background materials on bioethical issues relevant to NIH/NIAID research for use by NIAID staff; reviewing clinical trial protocols upon request; working with NIAID staff to identify, coordinate, and resolve issues concerning ethical principles and the application of United States and international regulations and ethical guidelines in international settings; providing expert input in planning and organizing stakeholder meetings on bioethics topics.  Excellent research, oral communication and writing skills needed, and experience and advanced training in bioethics required.

Homeland Security Internship Opportunity

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. This program is open to undergraduate students in a broad spectrum of DHS mission-relevant research areas and graduate students interested in the specific field of Nuclear and Radiological Threat Detection.

The DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to conduct research at federal research facilities located across the country. The goal of this program is to engage a diverse, educated, and skilled pool of scientists and engineers in HS-STEM issues and to promote long-term relationships between student researchers, DHS, and federal research facilities to enhance the HS-STEM workforce.

DHS has partnered with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) to manage the application and review process, notification, and implementation of the program.

Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women’s Hospital Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Law and Health Services Research

The Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Medicine and Harvard Medical School invites applications for a new postdoctoral fellowship in pharmaceutical law and health services research.  Areas of focus include regulation, intellectual property, and comparative effectiveness, as well as the development, approval, and evidence-based use of drugs, devices, vaccines, procedures, or diagnostics.

Applications are invited from scholars with doctoral degrees (M.D., J.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D., or equivalent) or who will complete such training by July 2013.  Fellows will have an appointment at Harvard Medical School, receive close mentorship from faculty members in the Division, and engage in one or more projects intended to start their careers in law and public health research. Penn Fellowship in Advanced Medical Ethics

The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine invites applications for a new postdoctoral Fellowship in Advanced Biomedical Ethics, beginning in September 2013.  The mission of this 2-year Fellowship is to train scholars and future leaders in academic biomedical ethics.  Fellows will participate fully in the life of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy, which is among the world’s leading bioethics departments.  They will have full access to the intellectual resources of the larger Penn community.

Applications are invited from scholars with doctoral degrees in hand (PhDs or equivalent, JDs, MDs), or who will have received such degrees by September 2013.  Doctorates may be in any relevant field, including but not limited to philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, economics or anthropology.

Safra Center Fellowships on Institutional Corruption

The Edmond J. Safra Lab at Harvard University lets us know that it is once again seeking to admit talented scholars and practitioners, at any stage of their career, who will uncover and explain institutional corruption and build tools to counteract it.

They have four types of fellowships open for the 2013-14 academic year:

1. Lab Fellowships and Projects: Funded residential and non-residential fellowships and projects for scholars and collaborators engaged in research and practice that directly address institutional corruption.

2. Applied Data Fellowship: A funded residential fellowship offered to a quantitative problem-solver who will translate the Lab’s research into applied tools, and help to deliver the Lab’s real-world impact on institutional corruption.

3. Investigative Journalists: Funded residential Lab fellowships for investigative journalists to write monographs about institutional corruption within selected institutions or fields.

4. Network Fellowships: Non-funded scholars working independently on projects related to institutional corruption.

Position Announcement: University of Georgia Law School – Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic

The University of Georgia School of Law seeks a tenure-track assistant professor to serve as the director of a to-be-created Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) Clinic, beginning the 2013 – 2014 academic year. Job expectations include both clinical work and the production of academic scholarship.

On the scholarship side, the director must be able to satisfy all the standards applicable to other members of the tenure-track faculty, including the production of first-rate scholarship published in major law reviews.

On the clinical side, the successful applicant will be responsible for establishing partnership(s) with medical providers in the community to house the new MLP Clinic.  The goal of the MLP Clinic is to provide legal services to underserved individuals receiving treatment from the medical provider.  Responsibilities include managing the partnership relationship, teaching the classroom component of the Clinic, and supervising student legal work in the Clinic.

Finally, the director will teach a related doctrinal course.
